Stormwater System Assessment: CCTV Drain Camera Inspection
A Toronto commercial property was experiencing flooding, so Leak Hunters used CCTV drain cameras to locate and resolve the blocked stormwater pipes.
Background
A commercial property in Toronto, NSW, was getting regular flooding inside whenever it rained heavily. Worried about the ongoing water damage, the property owner contacted us to inspect the issue, using our CCTV drain camera setup.
Inspection Process
Our technician Michael went out to inspect the stormwater system using a CCTV drain camera and pipe locator. Here’s what we discovered:
- The stormwater pipes at the back of the building were running horizontally through the ceiling and draining into an enclosed duct located on the eastern side.
- At the front, the pipes also travelled horizontally through the ceiling and dropped into a vertical stack behind the waiting room.
- A dye test confirmed that the stormwater system drains into a 150 mm PVC stormwater inspection opening in the footpath.Â
The big problem? The pipes were full of asphalt, debris, and rubbish. No wonder the drains weren’t working properly!
Findings and Next Steps
The build-up of asphalt, debris, and rubbish within the stormwater pipes is likely to have been what’s been causing the blockages. We recommended using a high-pressure water jetter to clear everything and get the flow back to normal.
We also suggested a hydrostatic drop test to check for leaks. If the pressure drops, the pipes will need repairs. If the test is clear, the next step is to check the building’s external waterproofing to stop any water sneaking in from outside.
