At Leak Hunters, we see shower leaks every week across Newcastle. Most of them don’t start as obvious problems. They start small. Damp grout. A corner that never quite dries. A smell that lingers after the shower’s been used. Because it doesn’t look serious, many homeowners leave it alone. Unfortunately, that’s when the real damage starts.
Catching the problem early makes all the difference, and knowing how to spot a shower leaking behind the wall helps you act before the damage reaches the framing.
Why Shower Leaks Are So Common
Showers are one of the most heavily used areas in any home. Over time, materials naturally wear out. From our experience, the most common causes of shower leaks include:
- Cracked or ageing grout
- Silicone seals breaking down
- Movement in walls or floors
- Failed waterproofing under the tiles
Once water gets behind the tiles, it can spread through walls and flooring without being visible from the surface.
What Happens When Leaks Are Left Untreated
When water escapes behind a shower, it doesn’t stay in one place. We often find:
- Timber framing that has started to rot
- Tiles lifting or becoming loose
- Mould growth inside wall cavities
- Water damage to nearby rooms
By the time these signs become obvious, repairs are usually more involved and more expensive than they needed to be.
Why Proper Leak Detection Makes a Difference
We regularly attend homes where surface repairs have already been attempted. While these fixes may improve the appearance, they rarely address the real source of the leak. Proper leak detection allows us to locate exactly where the water is escaping and carry out targeted repairs that last.
If you suspect a shower leak in your Newcastle home, don’t wait for the damage to spread. Call our professional team at Leak Hunters today and let us locate the problem and fix it the right way.
